Voice-Over Word Counter - True spoken word count for VO pros

Paste Script: Start Your Voice-Over Word Count

What is the Voice-Over Word Counter Tool?

This is a script length calculator like no other. It's specifically designed for voice-over artists and creatives in the audio industry.
The problem: When you get a script, the word count your text editor gives you is wrong - at least for your purposes. It counts what's written, not what you'll actually say.

Think about it: "$1,234.56" is one "word" in a document, but when you step up to the mic, you're saying "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents" - that's twelve words. A URL, a phone number, a date, a percentage - they all expand when spoken. A 250-word script on paper might actually be 400+ words at the microphone.

That difference matters. It affects your pacing, your timing, your quotes, and whether you can hit a :30 or :60 spot.

What the Script Counter does: You paste your script in, and it converts everything into the words you'll actually speak. Numbers become words. Currencies get spelled out with dollars and cents. Dates, times, measurements, phone numbers, URLs, email addresses, fractions, ordinals - all of it gets expanded to match what comes out of your mouth.

You get two numbers back: your original word count and your true spoken word count. You also get the fully expanded script so you can see exactly what changed.

You stay in control. Every type of expansion is a toggle. Maybe you read URLs letter-by-letter but you say dates as numbers. Maybe you expand currency but leave phone numbers as-is. The tool remembers your preferences so it works the way you read.

Why it matters:

  • Accurate quoting: charge for the words you're actually speaking, not the ones on the page
  • Reliable timing: know the real word count before you pair it with the Script Timer for a time estimate
  • No surprises in the booth: see exactly how a script expands before you hit record
  • Handles everything: 43 currencies, 60+ measurement units, dates in multiple formats, Unicode fractions, SI prefixes, shorthand like "$1.5M," and more

It's the word counter that counts the way you speak.

Voice-Over Word Counter - FAQs

How does VOWordCounter differ from standard script word counters?

Standard word counters and script length calculators typically count words as they are written. VOWordCounter (Voice-Over Word Counter) is specifically designed for spoken word content, and for voice over artists. It intelligently expands numbers (e.g., "100" to "one hundred"), currency ("$50.01" to "fifty dollars and one cent"), URLs, email addresses, and more, based on your selected options. This gives you a "Processed Word Count" that more accurately reflects how long it will take to speak the script.

Can I customize which expansions are applied?

Absolutely! The "Options" panel on the right allows you to toggle various pre and post-processing rules and expansion types on or off. This gives you full control over how your script is processed to match your specific needs or a client's requirements.

Is my script data saved on your servers?

No — the script runs entirely in your browser. Your script text never leaves your device or touches a server. For your convenience, selected options and the input script text are temporarily saved in your browser's local storage, so if you refresh the page or come back later in the same session, your last pasted script might still be visible in the text area. You can clear this by clicking the "Clear" button or clearing your browser's cache.

What types of scripts can I use with VOWordCounter?

Though we call it Voice Over Word Counter, you can use our tool for any text-based script. It's particularly useful for audiobooks, e-learning modules, radio and TV commercials, corporate narration, IVR prompts, podcast scripts, video game scripts, and any other content that will be spoken.

Is there a limit to the script length I can process?

While there's no hard-coded limit, extremely long texts (e.g., an entire novel pasted at once) might lead to slower processing times or unresponsiveness in some browsers due to the computational intensity of the expansions. For very long projects, we recommend processing them in manageable chunks, like chapters or large sections. If you run into trouble, please let us know at info@vowordcounter.com.

How is the "Processed Word Count" actually calculated?

The "Processed Word Count" is the number of words in your script after all the selected pre-processing rules and text expansions have been applied. For instance, if "$1,234.56" becomes "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents", that single written item contributes many words to the processed count. This count is designed to be a much better indicator of actual speaking time than a simple word count.

What currencies and measurements are supported?

The Script Counter supports 43 currencies including USD ($), EUR, GBP, JPY, INR, and many more, along with their fractional units (cents, pence, etc.). It also handles 60+ measurement units across metric, imperial, and scientific systems, including SI prefixes like kilo, mega, and giga. Units like km/h, kWh, and m² are all expanded correctly. For a full breakdown with examples, see our complete features reference.

Does it work with scripts pasted from Word or Google Docs?

Yes. You can paste directly from Microsoft Word, Google Docs, or any text editor. The tool strips out formatting and works with the plain text content. If your script includes special characters, Unicode symbols, or non-English characters, those are handled too. The only thing to watch for is that some word processors use "smart quotes" or unusual dash characters, but the preprocessor normalizes these automatically.

Can I use this for audiobook-length scripts?

Yes, though for very long texts (a full novel, for example), you may notice slower processing times in the browser. We recommend processing audiobook-length projects in chunks, such as individual chapters or sections. This also makes it easier to review the expanded output and spot anything that needs adjusting. There is no hard limit on script length, but breaking it up gives you better results and a smoother experience.

Is this tool free?

Yes. The Voice-Over Word Counter is completely free to use with no limits, no sign-ups, and no ads. The same goes for our script timer. Both tools are built for working voice-over professionals and we plan to keep them free.
